Hand forged Tirling pin (historic Scottish door bell)

Here attached to the workshop door, including whisky barrel back and two screws.

THE SCOTS' TIRLING-PIN.

The Tirling-Pin had its origin in the very old manner of fastening the door with a sliding rod to which a ring was attached to hang over the hook on the door-post.

It is often referred to in the old Ballads, when the lover called to sec his sweetheart, as in "Charlie is my Darling":

"Sae licht's he jumpit up the stair An' tirled at the pin;

An' wha sae ready as hersel

Tae let the laddie in."

and in "Wee Willie Winkie":

Crying at the window, tirling at the lock, Are the weans in their bed, for its now ten o'clock,"
